husband and I at Thomas & Elizabeth's stones in 2001.
THOMAS PHILP
(my great, great grandfather)
second son of Robert Kemp and Thomasin (O'Brien) Philp was born 3 June 1797 in Mylor, Cornwall, England.
Due to the custom of primogeniture, he would not be in line to inherit the family's wealth which went to the first son.  So, sometime in the 1820's, he boarded a ship and set sail for America.  The family legend is that he and his brother, James, landed in Canada (see article from the Prairie Historian).  However, there is no proof that he came via Canada or that James came with him.

Thomas is first found in Gallipolis, Ohio, where he met and married ELIZABETH BALTZELL on 10 Feb 1825.  Elizabeth was born in Morgantown, Mongalia Co., Virginia to DANIEL and MARGARET (WARE) BALTZELL.

Thomas, Elizabeth and daughter, Mary Eliza, left Virginia for Kentucky around 1826.   In about 1839, the family moved to Ball Hill Twp., Jefferson Co., Illinois and eventually to Central City where they lived until their deaths.  The children of Thomas and Elizabeth Philp are pictured below except for George Byron who was born in 1827 in Kentucky and lived only 9 months, Emily Francis who died in 1854, and Thomas Baltzell who died in 1863.
